Progress

So today, during my run, I was thinking about progress, i.e. how far I have come, how I feel about my direction, where do I want to go now, how happy I feel, and just reflecting on everything that embodies me living. However, I think of this illusion of progress that we all seem to be caught up in. I mean yes, we may earn more money and we may have the ability to do better things, but at times progress can be an illusion.

  1. I do know that feeling I think. Where you ask yourself "Am I really any better off now? Am I any happier?" It is almost as if more money and the ability to do "better" things comes with more headaches and worries. You know the constant "How will I maintain this?" "This brand new computer will be obsolete in a few months." Progress can probably only really be measured by increasing the amount of true happiness in one's life. I have been asking myself a lot lately, "Am I happy? Is what I am doing right at this moment making me happy?" Just because at any moment it could all be over - so, life is too full of chances to really be doing anything other than that which makes us happy. That's my belief anyway.

  2. I agree with you! At times I question myself about everything that is going on in my life so much so that I feel as though I lose time just thinking about things. I think you're right progress can be an illusion!

  3. Romeo, I agree with you as well. We are all infatuated by this idea of progress. As James mentions above, it is difficult to even understand how to measure progress. Once you take away all the material things that are, in the end, obsolete, the only thing left is one's happiness. Are you happy with where you have come and what you have done to get here? If it was all gone tomorrow, what would you be left with inside?
